Before you start…
You are about to entrust your one and only precious body to a complete stranger. There are some precautions you should take before you do so, and some questions to ask any potential trainer. Here goes:

Check their qualifications. Don’t engage anyone who doesn’t have a relevant degree, diploma or NVQ from a recognized body. They also need a First Aid qualification.

Ask your trainer what experience they have, and about areas of specialism. They should be able to provide references or let you talk to other clients. See if they can back up their claims.

Check that they will carry out an initial health screening. If the answer is NO, then go elsewhere. The screening should consist of questions about your health and medical history, monitoring of heart rate and blood pressure, measurement of body fat, and discussion of your personal goals. If there are any irregularities in your screening, then your trainer will (should) advise you to see a doctor before you embark on any fitness programme.

Make sure you know what your trainer will cost, in entirety, up front. They will probably charge an hourly rate. Ask whether there will be any charges on top of this at any time, for instance, for travel expenses or special equipment.

Is there a rapport between you? It’s vital that you trust your trainer and that you can communicate. Your trainer should be able to motivate, encourage and support you – avoid anyone whom you suspect might use bullying or humiliation to drive you onwards!

Use your common sense when meeting a trainer for the first time. Until you have checked them out, don’t let them visit your home when you are alone. If you live on your own, you could suggest that you meet for the first time at a local gym or sports centre to talk things over.
